“On my Feet” Scene Study Technique by Eric Stone

• Read the scene out loud together several times with nothing in mind but the vague(or somewhat clear) ideas from the “Off my feet process”…make notes and discoveries as you go along.

• Make the place here and now/activities/objects/ condition/ atmosphere, and read again focusing primarily on those aspects.

• Never go for emotion at any early stage of the rehearsal.

• Relationship: who is this person? What are the striking differences/any fact I know from author or other characters about our relationship(age difference, interests, personality).  Try different approaches.

• What do I want here and now/how am I going to get it/what’s in my way/try different approaches with different obstacles of different natures.

• Raising the stakes/why do I want what I want/how badly/ and what happens if I get it/don’t get it.  Try different stakes.

• Character: who am I/get your ideas and start playing with any angle on character imaginable: Need, point of view, center, voice quality/energy/physical condition/anything that affects character behavior.

• Subtext, line by line.  Investigating imagery, subconscious thoughts as well as “recurring monologues”(what my character says to him/herself).

• Beat by beat, keep raising the stakes.

• Keep adding and eliminating ideas(after you test them).

• Improv on different circumstances.

• Start crystallizing your ideas into a score of actions both physical (to do with place) and psychological (to do with intentions and obstacles).

• Try gibberish, really loud, subtext only, reverse roles, different characters from other plays, films or life, facing the audience, no pause between sentences and lines.

• Deal with entrances and expectations before the scene begins.

Eric Stone also known as artist Philippe Benichou first studied privately in New York with Herbert Berghof, Uta Hagen, Lee Strasberg, Stella Adler, William Hickey, Tony Allen, Austin Pendleton & Bob Mc Andrew from the Wynn Handman Studio. In addition, Mr. Stone was privileged to work with Judith Unland in New York. Ms. Unland had been a private student of Michael Checkhov. Eric Stone Eric Stone first began teaching in 1983 and has contributed to the growth and success of many actors and performers including some well known stars in the US and abroad. He founded the Eric Stone Studio in 1989 in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara and began touring with weekend workshops around the country.
